Photography Contests

IMPORTANT:  The following statements apply to all Member photography contests:  By submitting your photo to GFWC, you are providing GFWC with a royalty-free perpetual license to use, reproduce, post, display, create deriviative works, sell, license, or sub-license the work in any media now known or later invented without limitation, for commercial or non-commercial purposes.  

The World in Pictures, GFWC Volunteers in Action, and Great States Updates and Student Photography will all be judged on the Club, District, and State Levels.  A Year in Pictures will be judged separately, according to the stated rules.

The World in Pictures

Categories

·        Natural History:  flowers, animals, insects, birds, trees, etc.

·        Scenic:  vistas, landscapes, seascapes, snow scenes, bridges, parks, mountains, farmland, etc.  (A person or animal is allowed in the picture as long as it is not the focal point)

·        Feature:  human interest picture including people, patriotic photos, events, etc.

Rules

·        Photographers must be dues paying members of active GFWC clubs.

·        Entries can be black and white or color photos.

·        Size of entry (including mat) must be at least 10" x 12" and no larger than 14" x 16".  All others will be disqualified.  No frames or glass.  Entries must be matted.

·        Back of each photo must have an arrow drawn indicating the top. 

·        Each photo must have the following information on the back:  GFWC category name, photographer's name, address, phone number, e-mail, name and state of sponsoring club, brief caption giving location and situation of the photo, photo title.

·        Photos must be taken during the contest year (Jan. 1 - Dec. 31, 2008).

·        States are entitled to one entry in each of the three categories.

·        Contestants must be amateur photographers; earnings from photography must not exceed $500 annually.

·       Photos will not be returned.    

  • Photos may be taken using film or digital cameras.  Date stamps should not appear on photographs, nor can digital photos be submitted via e-mail.

·        Photos may be taken using film or digital cameras.

·        The same image may be submitted to "The World in Pictures", "GFWC Volunteers in Action" and A Year in Pictures" photo contests, but separate photos must be entered in each contest.

GFWC VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION

Photos should "describe" a club project; e.g.,  club members reading to children for a Read across America project, digging and planting a garden for a beautification project, selling cookies at a bake sale for a fundraising project, etc.  Judges will look for "action" shots rather than a posed group of GFWC members.

  • Judges will look at overall creativity of subject and quality of photograph.

  • All entries must be matted.  Size of entry (including matting) must be a t least 10" x 12", but no larger than 14" x 16", with no frame or glass.  All others will be disqualified.

  • Each photo must have the following information on the back:  photographer's name, address, phone number, e-mail, name and state of sponsoring club, brief caption giving location, situation and names of people in photo.  Please note if photograph was taken at a club, district or state meeting.

Awards

The World in Pictures and GFWC Volunteers in Action

State Level:  A GFWC certificate will be presented to the first place winners (both contests) in each state.

National Level:  Cash awards and GFWC certificates will be presented to the top three national entries in each category of "The World In Pictures" and to the top three winners in the "GFWC Volunteers in Action" contest:  1st - $100, 2nd - $75, 3rd - $50.  The top entries will be featured in the GFWC Clubwoman magazine.  Awards are made possible by Joel Karesh, International Convention Photography, Inc.

Great States Update

2009 ONLY

GFWC Headquarters would like to update photos representing each state.  Winners' photos will hang proudly in you GFWC Headquarters home, Washington, D. C.

Each state is responsible for judging.

Guidelines include:

  • Photographers must be dues-paying members of active GFWC clubs.

  • Photo should represent the entire state.

  • Consideration should be given to how well the photo represents the state and to the artistic merits of the photo itself.

  • The horizontal photo should be no larger than 20 x 18 inches (including frame, mat, and glass).  No vertical photos, please.

  • Photo should be in color and may originate from digital format, if desires; photo should not contain a visible date stamp.

  • State information should be firmly attached to the back of the photo, including name of state, name of photographer, and description of location.

  • Only the state's name and the photographer's name should be on the mat.  No plaques or poetry on framed photo will be accepted.

  • Only one photo per club.

Judging

Each state is responsible for judging.  Pennsylvania judging will be held at the Club, District, and state levels.  

Winning photo entry should be ready to hang - horizontal photo framed with mat and glass not to exceed 20 x 18 inches.  

No GFWC awards will be given and photos will not be returned.

National Level:  Winning states' photos will be exhibited at the GFWC Annual International Convention in 2010.  Winning photo will represent the state and be on display at GFWC Headquarters, Washington, D.C.

A Year in Pictures 

(Calendar Contest)

·        Photographers must be dues paying members of active GFWC clubs.

·        All entries (flowers, fauna, vistas, etc.) will be considered.  Judges will look for photos particularly suitable for calendars, such as photos relevant to particular months of seasons.

·        Photos must be horizontal.

·        Entries must be color prints.

·        All entries must be matted.  Size of entry (including matting) must be at least 10" x 12" but no larger than 14" x 16" with no frame or glass.  All others will be disqualified.

·        The back of each photo must have an arrow drawn indicating the top.  Each photo must have the following information on the back:  photographer's name, address, phone number, e-mail, name and state of sponsoring club, a brief caption giving location and situation of the photo and photo title. 

·        Photos must be taken during the contest year (Jan. 1 - Dec. 31, 2008)

National Level:  The twelve winning photos will appear in the annual GFWC calendar, with GFWC certificates presented to each winner.

RULES

·        Rectangle style

·        No frames or glass coverings or plastic or synthetic coverings of any kind.  A paper dust covering for the front and applied to the back may be used.

·        All entries must be matted.

·        Display:  Contestant is responsible for proper display.  Easels will be provided for the State Level of competition only.

·        Back of each photo must have an arrow drawn indicating the top of the photo.

·        Write a brief caption about the location and situation of a 3" x 5" card and affix to back of photo.

·        Photos must be taken during the contest year (Jan. 1 - Dec. 31, 2008).

·        Entry Forms:  A fully completed entry form must be affixed to the back of each entry with information neatly printed or typed.

·        Entries will be prejudged at the District and State Levels.  It is the responsibility of the arts chairman to make arrangements for the photography to be forwarded to the next level of competition.

·        Student photography will be judged on the club, county, district and state levels.
